A tragic incident occurred at Chicago O’Hare International Airport early Thursday morning, resulting in the death of a 57-year-old woman who became entangled in a baggage carousel. The woman, whose identity has not yet been released, was not an airport employee but a member of the public.
According to the Chicago Fire Department, emergency responders were called to Terminal 5 around 7:45 a.m. after reports of a woman being “pinned in machinery.” When they arrived, they found the woman caught in the conveyor belt system used to transport luggage. Medics pronounced her dead at the scene.
Police reported that surveillance footage showed the woman entering a restricted area at approximately 2:27 a.m. She was discovered around 7:30 a.m., prompting an emergency response. The area has been secured as a crime scene, and the Chicago Police Department is investigating the incident.
The circumstances leading up to the woman’s access to the restricted area and her entanglement in the baggage system remain under investigation. The incident has prompted a broader inquiry into airport safety and security protocols.
