14 Dead decomposing bodies and drugs

Forensic authorities in the Dominican Republic are working to identify the remains of at least 14 decomposed bodies found on an abandoned vessel located 10 nautical miles off the northern coast. The Dominican Republic Navy has indicated that documentation discovered near the bodies suggests they were from Senegal and Mauritania.

Authorities are also trying to determine the cause and time of death, as well as investigating 12 packages found on the boat that are suspected to contain illicit drugs, such as cocaine or heroin. Additionally, cell phones and geolocation devices were recovered from the vessel.

It is believed that the boat was traveling from West Africa to Europe, a perilous route known for its dangers. Boats that miss their destination can be carried by Atlantic trade winds and currents, drifting for months. Migrants on these vessels often succumb to dehydration and malnutrition.
